Super Cruise: Hands-Free Driving

I remember trying out Tesla’s self-driving feature several years ago on a test drive. I had similar feelings about Super Cruise until I began playing with it on the relatively short drive from NYC to my buddy Giuseppe’s place in New Paltz the day before we’d make the nearly 800-mile push from there to Murdochville. To be sure, GM says it is approaching the concept of hands-free driving as safely and cautiously as it can. Miller contrasts this approach with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving, which still retains its status as a beta product despite being available to over 400,000 Tesla owners in North America. The company recently stopped using its “Ultra Cruise” brand, which was intended to be its big Tesla competitor, deciding instead to merge the team that was working on it with its Super Cruise division. Ultra Cruise was intended to cover “95 percent of driving scenarios” on over 2 million miles of road.

But You’ve Gotta Stay Engaged — and That’s a Good Thing

The light bar on the steering wheel will automatically change color from green to blue. Once the maneuver is completed, the driver can remove their hands from the wheel once the vehicle is centered in the lane and the steering wheel light bar turns green. Super Cruise† is a hands-free driver assistance technology for compatible roads. Super Cruise uses advanced technologies to provide the ease and convenience of hands-free driving. A Super Cruise symbol will display on the instrument cluster if a compatible road is detected.

The system also uses LiDAR for the adaptive cruise control part of the system. Super Cruise™† is the first true hands-free driving technology for compatible roads. Learn how to use Super Cruise on vehicles equipped with this feature.

HOW TO UTILIZE YOUR GMC INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM

Lane change functionality is temporarily disabled and will not be available when you’re trailering with Super Cruise. The Super Cruise symbol will then turn red and you will need to immediately retake control of the vehicle. On some vehicles, when all other driving conditions are met but your vehicle is not centered in your lane, the Super Cruise symbol will light up blue until your vehicle is centered in your lane. Super Cruise’s head-tracking software helps make sure your eyes are on the road, and it alerts you when you need to pay more attention or take back control. Real-time cameras, sensors and GPS, along with LiDAR precision map data, work in tandem to detect every curve, helping the vehicle stay centered in the lane and elevating the comfort and convenience of your commute. Available Cadillac Super Cruise offers the ease and convenience of hands-free driving on compatible highways.

GM launched Super Cruise in 2017 with the Cadillac brand and has added capabilities, expanded Super Cruise-enabled routes and availability on more products since then. To date, approximately 10 million miles have been driven by customers using Super Cruise across the U.S. and Canada.

Super Cruise† includes the latest map updates and an innovative Driver Attention System to monitor that you’re paying attention to the highway ahead. It takes some getting used to and sometimes feels superfluous, but I did find some of the pulsing kind of helpful and safety-enhancing in its own weird way. Speaking of weird, here’s a funky thing you can do when Super Cruise is engaged — flick the turn signal stalk on the highway, and if the road is clear, the vehicle will change lanes without you doing another thing. I started with simple cruise control and adaptive braking, which is pretty handy for giving your foot a rest on the highway.

Some features shown may have limited, late or no availability. If no opening is detected, Super Cruise will slow the vehicle to a minimum gap distance until an opening is found. To start, a driver must already be using Adaptive Cruise Control. There’s no trick to using Super Cruise if all the required conditions are met.

How do I manually steer the vehicle when Super Cruise is engaged?

The result was being more alert and attentive for a longer duration and not suddenly feeling like it was time for rest stops. Instead, it was a case of "Oh, I could use a coffee and a snack," not, "I need a break." In light traffic on a reasonably maintained road, Super Cruise went for an hour smoothly without fault. One thing that really stands out is something the YDU didn’t do, which is leave me feeling totally exhausted upon arrival at our lodgings after some 14 hours on the road. That says a ton for both the comfy interior and certainly for Super Cruise. It’s pretty awesome to endure such a punishing drive and wake up the next morning refreshed and ready to tackle a mountain.

Works with Super Cruise† to automatically detect vehicles travelling in the same direction in its path. With an attentive driver, and under the proper conditions, available Super Cruise† can permit hands-free operation of the vehicle. The technology functions with Chevrolet Connected Services† and uses real-time cameras, sensors, GPS and LiDAR map data to detect curves, helping to make long drives and commutes more comfortable. General Motors may be struggling when it comes to fully autonomous driving, but the company is still feeling bullish about the future of hands-free driving.

Suddenly, one of the cars decides also to join the overtaking lane, and Super Cruise reacts and keeps you safe by braking, but it's very sudden. The major selling point of Super Cruise is that it doesn't require the driver's hands on the wheel when engaged. It will accelerate, brake, cruise, and steer for you on a supported highway. We've experienced Super Cruise a few times but rarely take press cars on long freeway trips. So, when this writer was charged with driving to Las Vegas to drive McLaren's new supercar, Cadillac was good enough to supply an XT6 so we could spend quality time with Super Cruise on the four-and-a-half-hour road trip.

Safety or driver-assistance features are no substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. The driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings and road conditions at all times. Visibility, weather and road conditions may affect feature performance. Read the vehicle Owner’s Manual for more important feature limitations and information.

The Super Cruise† system is a highly sophisticated system and should be serviced by technicians who have proper training, tools and safety instructions. The technicians at your authorized Chevrolet dealer understand the intricacies of the Super Cruise† feature and are qualified to help you with servicing your vehicle. First, activate Adaptive Cruise Control.† If Adaptive Cruise Control is already set, the symbol on the instrument cluster will be green with a speed shown. We thought the cat's eyes would help now as they are only effective at night, but it didn't appear so. After that, Super Cruise made what's usually a tedious yet stressful drive easier.

Super Cruise is the industry’s first true hands-free driver-assistance technology allowing drivers to travel hands-free on over 200,000 miles of compatible roads across the U.S. and Canada. DETROIT – General Motors announced today it will introduce new Super Cruise1 capabilities on six model year 2022 vehicles in the first quarter of 2022. With an ever-growing network, select eligible Chevrolet vehicles can travel on over 400,000 miles of compatible roads throughout the United States and Canada, including both divided and non-divided highways.

The Super Cruise system is a highly sophisticated system and should only be serviced by technicians with the proper training, tools and safety instructions, which are qualifications Chevrolet dealers have. Super Cruise will use the Adaptive Cruise Control† set speed, however if you have not set the Adaptive Cruise Control speed when Super Cruise is activated, it will use your current speed as the Adaptive Cruise Control set speed. See how Super Cruise hands-free driving technology compares to Ford BlueCruise, Rivian Driver+ and Tesla AutoPilot.

Super Cruise functionality is enabled by a data connection for real-time, precise positioning and periodic Super Cruise map updates. All Super Cruise-equipped vehicles include 3 years of connectivity to support functionality, after which a Connected Services† plan must be purchased. The Super Cruise driver assistance technology uses Global Positioning System (GPS) sensing, GPS-enhanced data, a high-precision map and network of cameras to maintain automatic control of vehicle steering on compatible roads. The GPS uses real-time corrections and map data to determine the vehicle’s location while the Lane Sensing Camera detects the marked lanes on the road to help the vehicle automatically steer and maintain lane position.
